Job Description:
Position Summary
The Firefighter Apprenticeship program is a 2-year program that
creates paid positions within a sponsoring agency. These positions
are designed to provide career-minded individuals with an
opportunity to gain firefighting experience through participation
in fire suppression, prevention, and rescue activities after
achieving measurable competencies.
Firefighter apprentices provide assistance on fire, hazardous
material, medical emergency and non-emergency calls. Perform fire
suppression, fire prevention, public education, and hazardous
material spill control duties. Assist with basic or advanced
emergency medical care and rescue, depending on EMT certification
level. Maintain documentation relative to patient incident and
treatment. Perform as trained, following Departmental guidelines,
making appropriate decisions, and communicating effectively in
stressful situations. These tasks are illustrative only and may
include other related duties.
Apprentice Firefighter Wages:
Step 1 $6,191.71 (Period One 73% = $4,519.95 monthly)
Step 2 $6,532.21 (Period Two 80% = $5,225.77 monthly)
Step 3 $6,891.54 (Period Three 100% = $6,891.54 monthly)
*Apprentices licensed as Oregon AEMTs, Intermediates or Paramedics
with department full standing orders shall receive licensure
pay

Essential Functions
Responds to emergency fire, hazardous material, rescue, and medical
alarm calls as a fourth member of assigned Fire/Rescue/EMS
Team.
Operates safely and competently all firefighting, hazardous
material, and emergency vehicles, and any specialized technical
equipment required of the position.
Performs fire suppression and hazardous material recognition,
identification, spill control, rescue, and emergency medical
duties.
Assists with preparation of pre-hospital care and case
documentation. Maintains required records and reports. Performs to
level of EMT certification.
Assists in maintaining drug and supply inventory, ensuring
adherence to legal controls on narcotics.
Cleans, maintains, tests and inspects fire and EMS equipment,
apparatus, and fire hydrants. Cleans and maintains vehicles, fire
station, and property. Performs minor/routine repairs as
needed.
Assists with inspecting properties for fire and life safety hazards
and Oregon Fire Code violations.
Participates in training and in pre-fire planning activities and
provides feedback to surrounding departments regarding calls.
Performs public education and other non?emergency public
services.
Provides leadership and coordinates medical care at medical
emergency scenes if certified as a State of Oregon Paramedic, with
full standing orders.
Acts ethically and honestly; applies ethical standards of behavior
to daily work activities and interactions. Builds confidence in the
City through your actions.
Operates and drives staff vehicles and/or equipment safely and
legally.
Delivers excellent customer service to diverse audiences.
Maintains effective work relationships.
Adheres to all City and Department policies.
Arrives to work, meetings, and other work-related functions on time
and maintains regular job attendance.
Qualifications and Skills
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent.
Apprenticeship program requirements - Each apprentice shall
complete the following college level classes and obtain an Oregon
EMT Basic Licensure for successful completion of the 2-year
program: Math 63, Writing 121, Building Construction for Fire
Fighters FP 166 and Technical Report Writing 227.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Maintain skill and knowledge level required of position, including
certification and recertification requirements. Knowledge and
understanding of firefighting, fire prevention, basic hazardous
materials identification, department policy and procedures, and
basic life support methods and procedures.
Adherence to the applicable standing orders as issued by the
Department's Supervising Physician and EMS Officer.
Thorough knowledge of the City of Corvallis, Corvallis Rural Fire
Protection District and Benton County Ambulance Service area,
including emergency routes, Fire Department connections, major
building locations, and target hazards by the end of the
apprenticeship program.
Excellent public service skills and ability to maintain composure,
think clearly and apply knowledge under emergency and non-emergency
conditions.
Ability to get along well with coworkers and other agencies, and to
maintain effective work relationships.
Ability to use a computer to perform the essential functions of the
position.
Ability to safely and efficiently operate staff vehicles and
equipment. Ability to operate specialized technical equipment such
as thermal imaging cameras, cardiac monitors, etc.
Adherence to City and Department policies including smoking, drugs,
alcohol, grooming, and residency.
Ability to maintain neat, functional and complete work uniform and
personal protective equipment as per department guidelines.
Physical stamina to work with limited sleep or meals as needed.
Adherence to knowledge, health, and physical fitness standards
established by the Corvallis Fire Department.
Special Requirements
Valid Oregon driver's license, a minimum of 3 years licensed
driving experience, and a driving record that meets the standards
set by the City of Corvallis and Oregon Revised Statutes.
Must successfully meet the physical demands of duties in accordance
with NFPA Standard 1582.
Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation
including criminal history check. Ability to obtain and maintain
Oregon State Police Criminal Justice Information Systems
clearance.
